Custom automatic right-angle milling heads for boring and milling machines, designed around the customer's spindle interface, mounting dimensions and machining requirements.

An automatic right-angle milling head is not always an off-the-shelf accessory. When the existing machine has a specific spindle interface, limited working space, or a special positioning requirement, the milling head has to be designed around the machine and the customer's actual machining conditions.

 

This project started with a customer drawing for a 2.5° automatic right-angle milling head. Instead of selecting a standard head, our engineering team developed the head according to the customer's mounting dimensions, spindle connection and tool requirements. The finished unit was manufactured, assembled and finally installed and commissioned at the customer's site.

1. Understanding the Automatic Right-Angle Milling Head

The main purpose of an automatic right-angle milling head is to change the machining direction of the machine tool. It allows the machine spindle to drive a milling tool in a different direction, making it possible to machine surfaces that cannot be reached directly by the original spindle.

 

For a large boring and milling machine, this is particularly useful. A right-angle head can extend the machine's capability to side milling, end-face milling, drilling, boring and other operations where the tool needs to approach the workpiece from another direction. Similar configurations are used on floor-type boring machines and large gantry machining equipment.

 

In this project, the customer required more than a basic 90-degree attachment. The drawing specifies a 2.5° positioning requirement, together with defined mounting interfaces and locating features. The head therefore had to match the customer's machine rather than simply meet a general dimensional standard.

 

The drawing shows a BT50 tool interface, a 160 h6 boring-spindle interface and a Ø260 h5 milling-shaft dimension. It also specifies two Ø30 k6 locating pins and four M24 mounting holes with a 50 mm depth. These details are important because the head has to locate accurately and remain securely fixed during cutting.


2. Manufacturing the Custom Automatic Right-Angle Milling Head

Once the drawing was reviewed, the production work focused on the interfaces that directly affect installation and machining stability.

 

The main body was machined according to the customer's mounting dimensions. The drawing gives an overall envelope of approximately 450 × 450 mm, with several locating and mounting dimensions controlled to tight tolerances, including 150 ±0.05 mm, 185 ±0.01 mm and 200 ±0.01 mm.

 

For an automatic right-angle milling head, these dimensions are not simply part of the appearance. They determine whether the head can be installed correctly on the customer's machine and whether the milling spindle reaches the required machining position.

 

The spindle and locating components therefore require controlled fits. The drawing identifies h5 and h6 shaft fits, together with key and locating-pin features. The tool side uses a BT50 interface, allowing the customer's machine to work with its existing tooling system.

 

After machining, the components were assembled as a complete automatic right-angle milling head. The electrical and sensing positions were also considered during assembly, as the drawing identifies four proximity-switch locations. This is important for automatic positioning and for confirming the head's working position during machine operation.

3. Installation and Commissioning at the Customer's Site

The real test of a custom automatic right-angle milling head is not the workshop assembly. It is whether the head can be installed on the customer's machine and work correctly under actual operating conditions.

After production and assembly were completed, our team delivered the automatic right-angle milling head to the customer's site for installation and commissioning.

 

The first step was to install the head according to the customer's original mounting interface. The locating pins, mounting holes and spindle connection had to match the machine accurately. The BT50 tool interface was then checked as part of the machining setup.

 

The team continued with the automatic positioning and operating checks. Particular attention was given to the 2.5° positioning requirement because this was one of the customer's specific requirements rather than a generic configuration.

 

After installation and adjustment, the automatic right-angle milling head was successfully commissioned on the customer's machine.

 

This project shows why a custom milling head should be designed from the customer's machine interface backward. The important point is not simply the head itself, but the relationship between the machine spindle, mounting structure, positioning system and cutting tool.

Where Can an Automatic Right-Angle Milling Head Be Used?

An automatic right-angle milling head is commonly used when a machine needs additional machining directions without replacing the main machine tool. Typical applications include heavy machinery, construction equipment, energy equipment, large gearbox housings, machine bases, structural components, molds and large mechanical parts. Large machining centers and boring mills can use right-angle heads for side surfaces, vertical walls, side holes and other features that are difficult to reach with the main spindle.

 

For this type of equipment, the actual application depends on the customer's machine, workpiece dimensions and required cutting operations. That is why the mounting dimensions, spindle interface, positioning accuracy and tool specification need to be considered together.

 

From the customer's original drawing to factory manufacturing and final site commissioning, this automatic right-angle milling head was developed around a specific machine requirement rather than a standard catalog configuration. The successful installation and commissioning completed the project from engineering drawing to actual machining equipment.
